The benefits of singing

Singing together with your child has every positive benefit. According to Dr Dianna Kenny, Professor of psychology and music at the University of Sydney, singing does for the soul what food and water do for our bodies.

Singing has also been found to reduce the stress hormone cortisol and increase immunoglobulin. From babyhood children who grow up hearing music, singing songs and moving to the beat are enjoying a rich sensory environment that is developmentally beneficial.

So start singing! Children will learn the songs that their parents sing regularly - in the car, in the bath, going to sleep and so on. Children love to make up their own songs about their experiences so be brave and become a composer!

Song lyrics and tunes are listed below so that you can learn new songs with your child each week.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Merry, merry king of the bush is he
Laugh, Kookaburra! Laugh, Kookaburra!
Gay your life must be

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Eating all the gum drops he can see
Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra!
Leave some there for me

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree
Counting all the monkeys he can see
Stop, Kookaburra! Stop, Kookaburra!
That's not a monkey that's me

Old McDonald had a Farm

Old Macdonald had a farm,
E-I-E-I-O
And on his farm he had a cow,
E-I-E-I-O,

With a "moo-moo" here and a "moo-moo" there

Here a "moo" there a "moo"
Everywhere a "moo-moo"
Old Macdonald had a farm,
E-I-E-I-O

Five Little Ducks

Five little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Mother Duck said
‘Quack, quack, quack, quack!
And only four little ducks came back!

*Ask children to add animals and sounds

This Old Man

This old man, he played one,
He played knick-knack on my thumb;
Knick-knack paddywhack,
Give a dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played two,
He played knick-knack on my shoe;
Knick-knack paddywhack,
Give a dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

This old man, he played three,
He played knick-knack on my knee;
Knick-knack paddywhack,
Give a dog a bone,
This old man came rolling home.

Polly Put the kettle on

Polly Put the kettle on
Polly put the kettle on,
Polly put the kettle on,
Polly put the kettle on,
We'll all have tea.

Sukey take it off again,
Sukey take it off again,
Sukey take it off again,
They've all gone away.

Miss Polly had a Dolly

Miss Polly had a dolly who was sick, sick, sick.
So she called for the doctor to come quick, quick, quick.
The doctor came with his bag and his hat
And he knocked on the door with a rat-a-tat-tat.
He looked at the dolly and he shook his head
And he said “Miss Polly, put her straight to bed!”
He wrote on a paper for some pills, pills, pills
“I’ll be back in the morning with my bill, bill, bill.”

Five Little Speckled Frogs

Five little speckled frogs
Sat on a great big log
Eating a most delicious bug
Yum yum,

One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool
Now there are only four speckled frogs
Glub Glub

*Continue song for four, three, two, one and no more speckled frogs

Five dinosaurs

(to tune of Row your boat)

Five enormous dinosaurs
Letting out a roar--
One went away, and
Then there were four.

Four enormous dinosaurs
Crashing down a tree--
One went away, and
Then there were three.

Three enormous dinosaurs
Eating tiger stew--
One went away, and
Then there were two.

Two enormous dinosaurs
Trying to run--
One ran away, and then there was one.

One enormous dinosaur,
Afraid to be a hero--
He went away, and
Then there was zero.

If I had a little car

If I had a little car,
This is what I’d do
I’d jump in it and start it up and
Drive it to see you
We’d drive along and beep the horn
And wave as off we sped
And then we’d drive home again
And park it in the shed

If I had an aeroplane,
This is what I’d do
I’d jump in it and start I up
And fly into the blue
I’d fly so high up in the sky
Birds would follow me
And then I’d turn around again
And land in time for tea

If I had a sailing ship
This is what I’d do
I’d sail East and sail West
Across the ocean blue
I’d sail north and sail south
And sail backwards too
And after I’d been everywhere
I’d sail right back to you

If I had a railway train
This is what I’d do
I’d huff and puff and puff and huff
And blow my whistle too
I’d shunt and grunt and grunt and shunt
And roll along the track
And all the boys and girls would hear
My wheels go clickety clack

Penguin Song

Penguin, penguin flap your little wings!
Penguin, penguin flap your little wings!
Chasing fish you swim all day,
You can’t fly, but that’s OK.
Penguin, penguin flap your little wings!

The Bear went over the mountain

The bear went over the mountain,
the bear went over the mountain

The bear went over the mountain,
to see what he could see.

And all that he could see,
and all that he could see

Was the other side of the mountain,
the other side of the mountain

The other side of the mountain,
was all that he could see.

The bear went over the river,

the bear went over the river
The bear went over the river,

to see what he could see.
And all that he could see,

and all that he could see
Was the other side of the river,
the other side of the river

The other side of the river,
was all that he could see.

Go cluck, cluck, cluck
Cluck, cluck, cluck
Cluck, cluck, cluck

Down on the farm

The cows in the barn
Go moo, moo, moo
Moo, moo, moo
Moo, moo, moo
The cows in the barn
Go moo, moo, moo
Down on the farm

The horses in the field
Go neigh, neigh, neigh
Neigh, neigh, neigh
Neigh, neigh, neigh
The horses in the field
Go neigh, neigh, neigh
Down on the farm

The ducks in the pond
Go quack, quack, quack
Quack, quack, quack
Quack, quack, quack
The ducks in the pond
Go quack, quack, quack
Down on the farm

The cats on the fence
Go meow, meow, meow
Meow, meow, meow

The cats on the fence
Go meow, meow, meow
Down on the farm

The dogs in the yard
Go arf, arf, arf
Arf, arf, arf

The dogs in the yard
Go arf, arf, arf
Down on the farm

Se sei felice tu lo sai (If your happy and you know it)

Se sei felice tu lo sai
batti le mani

Se sei felice tu lo sai
batti le mani

Se sei felice tu lo sai
e redere portrai

Se sei felice tu lo sai
batti le mani

If your happy and you know it
clap your hands

If your happy and you know it
clap your hands

If your happy and you know
Then you really ought to show it

If your happy and you know
clap your hands

I can see

Looking up into the tree
What do I see? What do I see?
I can see a bird and he sees me
When I look up into the tree

Looking up into the sky
What do I see? What do I see?
I see a cloud floating way up high
When I look up into the sky

Looking down below at the ground
What do I see? What do I see?
I see an ant crawling around
When I look down at the ground

Dinosaur egg

Inside her egg shell, white and round,
Baby dinosaur is safe and sound.

But she wants to come out into the light ,
So she pushes and shoves with all her might.
Her shell soon cracks and creaks and pops,

One big jump and out she pops!

In the Jungle

Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A yellow tiger crouching
Near me, me, me

Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A baby monkey laughing
At me, me, me

Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A creepy snake staring
At me, me, me

     Walking through the jungle
What did I see?
A great lion glaring
At me, me, me.

Cows in the kitchen

(sing to the tune of Skip to my Lou)

Cows in the kitchen moo, moo, moo

Cows in the kitchen moo, moo, moo

Cows in the kitchen moo, moo, moo

What shall we do Tom Farmer?

Pigs in the pantry, oink, oink, oink

Pigs in the pantry, oink, oink, oink

Pigs in the pantry, oink, oink, oink

What shall we do Tom Farmer?

Lambs in the laundry baa, baa baa

Lambs in the laundry baa, baa, baa

Lambs in the laundry baa, baa, baa

What shall we do Tom Farmer
